Thousands of love songs have been written throughout time. If asked to name your favorite love song, the answers would be many and varied. In 1 Kings 4:32, scripture tells us that Solomon wrote 1005 songs. Of these 1005 songs, God declares that this song is the song of all songs! The most beautiful and significant love song is nestled in the middle of the Holy Scripture! This song includes fourteen reflections (little songs) of Solomon and his Shulamite bride that ponder their courtship, wedding day, and marriage. Through these beautifully written reflections, much insight can be acquired that is both theological and practical as it relates to relationships before and after the wedding.
The first stanza begins as the Shulamite bride exclaims very passionately, “Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth”. This verse reveals that she has a very strong physical attraction to her husband! She announces that his love is better than wine! The Hebrew word “love” refers to sexual love or intimacy, while the word “wine” refers to a joyful banquet or feast! To the bride, her husband’s kisses represent a joyful feast where she savors the soft touch of his lips! The love between a husband and wife should be passionate – each one drawn to the other, feasting in love. God gives sexual intimacy to us as a wonderful gift! As we come together sexually, we grow in oneness and gain a better understanding of the intimate relationship God desires to have with each one of us! Husbands, pause now and kiss your girl!
